Ours is a crazy language where compound words make no sense and where opposites are true. For example:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>An eggplant contains no egg and a hamburger contains no ham.<\/li>\n<li>Quicksand works slowly, boxing rings are square, and guinea pigs do not come from Guinea.<\/li>\n<li>People recite at a play and play at a recital, send shipments by car and send cargo by ship, and have noses that run and feet that smell.<\/li>\n<li>If vegetarians eat vegetables, what do humanitarians eat?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Some corrected definitions for English learners<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Dust: Mud with the juice squeezed out.<\/li>\n<li>Chickens: The only animal you can eat before they are born and after they are dead.<\/li>\n<li>Beauty parlor: A place where women curl up and dye.<\/li>\n<li>Mosquito: An insect that makes you prefer flies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>American wisdom from US taverns<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeer is now cheaper than gas. Drink. Don\u2019t drive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe average human walks 900 miles per year and drinks 22 gallons of beer, which means that the average human gets 41 miles per gallon. Not bad!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>I suppose in any culture, people don\u2019t always think before they speak (or write) &#8212;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Helpful signs<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cWhen this sign is under water, this road is impassable.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cOpen seven days a week and weekends.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cAre you an adult who cannot read? If so, we can help.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cPersons are prohibited from picking flowers from any but their own graves.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>From a church newsletter:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cFor those of you who have children and don\u2019t know it, we have a nursery downstairs.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cOn Thursday there will be a meeting of the Little Mothers Club. All women wishing to become Little Mothers should see the minister in his private study.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Outside sign: \u201cDon\u2019t let worry kill you. Let the church help.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>At a fundraising event: \u201cI upped my pledge. Up yours!\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Actual quotes from doctors\u2019 dictated medical records\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cThe patient refused an autopsy.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cThe patient left his white blood cells at another hospital.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cOn the second day the knee was better.
