As President of a company that uses language to connect cultures, at year end, I enjoy reminding everyone why English is such a strange language. Although I have studied eight others, I am always amazed that foreigners learn English so well \u2026. because it often makes no sense.<\/p>\n
For example:<\/p>\n
Why is the time of day with the slowest traffic called rush hour?<\/p>\n
How are patients reassured that doctors have a \u201cpractice\u201d?<\/p>\n
If con is the opposite of pro, is Congress the opposite of Progress?<\/p>\n
Why is a bra singular and panties plural?<\/p>\n
If a deaf person must go to court, is the session still called a hearing?<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/strong>English logic<\/strong><\/p>\n Your house can burn up while it burns down.<\/p>\n An actor is\u00a0in<\/u>\u00a0a movie but\u00a0on<\/u>\u00a0TV.<\/p>\n You fill in a form by filling it out.<\/p>\n An alarm goes off by going on.<\/p>\n We have noses that run and feet that smell.<\/p>\n We ship by truck and send cargo by ship.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong>More English logic<\/strong><\/p>\n Writers write but fingers don\u2019t fing.<\/p>\n Grocers don\u2019t groce and hammers don\u2019t ham.<\/p>\n If electricity comes from electrons, does morality come from morons?<\/p>\n If corn oil comes from corn and vegetable oil comes from vegetables, what is baby oil made from?<\/p>\n Why are housing units all stuck together called Apartments?<\/p>\n Why does quicksand work slowly?<\/p>\n Why are no eggs in eggplants?<\/p>\n Why are boxing rings square?<\/p>\n Answers to these questions? Let\u2019s blame the Brits. They invented the language.
