Communication is often more than words. It can also involve gestures, silence or cultural taboos—especially important when interacting with ethnic groups or people abroad. For example:
- In Thailand and Muslim countries, pointing the soles of your shoes or feet at another person is extremely offensive. That means not to sit cross-legged. Since you don’t know who may be Thai or Muslim, it’s best not to cross your legs at all.
- Pointing with your index finger is offensive in many cultures. Rather than remembering which ones, it’s best not to do it at all. If you must point, keep your fingers together and point with your whole hand.
- Americans value independence, individualism and initiative. But these “positive” words when translated into languages of Asia carry very negative connotations because there, conformity to the Group is more highly prized.
- The Chinese often have long periods of silence while they decide how to respond whereas Americans, who are uncomfortable with silence, are very quick with their answers and opinions … even If these make no sense.
- In English, people are proud to “create” something. But among strict Muslims, only God can create. Translations into Arabic therefore should use other words such as “design” or “make.”
These cultural issues are not ones that AI normally detects. That’s why the language and global-marketing experts at Auerbach International will alert you if your text contains offensive words or implications.
BLOOPERS
Of course, when one does use words, sentences and signs should be accurate – unlike these:
- US Middle School sign: “Welcome back students. We are glad you are hear.”
- “Starting pay is $40K. Later it can rise to $80K.” “Great! I’ll start later.”
- Japanese sign in English: “If you are stolen, call the police at once."
- Article in Soviet Weekly magazine: “Next Thursday will be an exhibit of the works of 300 Russian artists and sculptors. These were executed over the past two years.”
TWO FINAL THOUGHTS
- The ability to speak several languages is an asset. But the ability to keep your mouth shut in any language is priceless.
