A Blushing Lobby, A Lobster Plane, Avoid the Manager, Ass-pirational Travel – Friday Funnies is Here

April returns spring to us. The name April likely originated from the Latin word "Aprilis". The reason the Romans choose "Aprilis" could be associated with the Latin word "aperire", which means "to open" (symbolizing the budding of flowers in spring.) Or it may have originated from the Etruscan form of the Greek goddess Aphrodite, named "Apru". In today's global landscape, effective communication requires more than just translation - it demands localization that captures the correct meaning within the cultural context of the target audience. There are no cultural questions surrounding these April observances:

  • National Trombone Players Day
  • International Pooper Scooper Week
  • Edible Book Day
  • Impossible Astronaut Day.

April, like every month, has some wild and wooly holidays. And as with mistranslations, facts are often stranger than fiction. Consider the following wacky translation errors:

  • A sign in Thailand advertising donkey rides: "Would You Like to Ride on Your Own Ass?"
  • A hotel in Zurich requested: "Because of the Impropriety of Entertaining Guests of the Opposite Sex in the Bedroom, it is Suggested that the Lobby be used for this Purpose."
  • An advertisement from the Russian airline Aeroflot proudly announced: "Introducing Wide Boiled Aircraft for Your Comfort."
  • A sign in a Nairobi restaurant exclaimed: "Customers who find our waitresses rude ought to see the manager."

While mistranslated signs may provide a moment of humor with little real consequence, the same cannot be said for unprofessional translations of your business communications. Your team has invested significant effort in building a brand know for quality and excellence. It stands to reason that your translated documents, websites, marketing materials, videos and presentations should reflect that same level of professionalism and precision when engaging non-English speaking audiences.

A final thought from Ralph Waldo Emerson: “You cannot do a kindness too soon, for you will never know how soon it will be too late."
