Happy Spring,
Welcome to the March 2021 installment of FRIDAY LANGUAGE FUNNIES – a humorous sample of faux pas to brighten your Friday and act as a reminder that a simple translation error could lead to disastrous results.
Here are a few examples of unintended translation stumbles that did these businesses all harm and no good:
- A Rhodes, Greece, men’s tailor shop displayed a sign that cautioned customers to “Order your summer suit. Because is big rush we will execute customers in strict rotation.”
- A famous luxury hotel in Zurich, Switzerland, reminded guests that “Because of the impropriety of entertaining guests of the opposite sex in the bedroom, is it suggested that the lobby be used for this purpose.”
- In Norway, a hotel cocktail lounge reminded the clientele that “Ladies are Requested Not to have Children in the Bar.”
- A Tokyo car rental agency brochure provided valuable instructions to customers, explaining that “When passenger of foot heave in sight, tootie the horn. Trumpet him melodiously at first, but if he still obstacles your passage then tootie him with vigor.”
These businesses found out that trusting even simple translations to a “multilingual” employee, a discount translation firm or an automated translation site can be a disaster. Auerbach International has spent more than three decades serving the language service needs of companies like yours. We make certain that your communications, simple or complex, will be language precise and localized so your message is always accurate.
The economy is rebounding and business activity is on the rise at home and abroad – let us help you grow your business… without tootie-ing anyone with vigor!
Best ~
Chris
